The day in Charlotte had been lovely, if cold. From the moment Jace and Noelle climbed in the truck and left Asheville, theyâd had a great time.
They spent the two-hour drive through rural and gorgeous North Carolina talking about everything and nothing, never once having anything that felt like an awkward moment. With each passing mile, they shared memories, experiences, viewpoints, and many, many laughs.
Then, in the bustling town, theyâd gone from one high-end store to another, looking for Chanel gloves. Dependable, charming Jace in his flannel and country-boy smile had been a fish out of Nieman-Marcus waters, but theyâd had fun searching for the perfect accessory, especially now that Noelle knew the dress.
They had lunch, did a little touring, and took a drive by Eveâs house. Sheâd texted a picture to Eve, who offered to give them the code to get in, which was tempting. But Jace saw in the forecast that there was a lot of snow on the way, so they opted to get back on the highway and drive home before it got too heavy.
âWell, we should go try to visit Eveâs house at some point,â Noelle said as they rolled along the highway. âThey wonât be there long. She said she and David found an open house for a new build in Hendersonville that theyâre going to see tomorrow.â
âWow, they really are making this move,â Jace said, shaking his head as he flipped the windshield wipers faster as the snow fell. âBut that house we drove by was really nice. Whatever they get for it, they can buy something great in Hendersonville.â
âHe wonât have a brain surgeonâs income, though,â Noelle reminded him.
âHuh.â Jace shot her a look. âLook at that. Guyâs changing his whole career, even taking what some might consider a step down professionally, all for love. Imagine that.â
She smiled, the not-so-subtle message heard loud and clear.
âAnd for a baby that he wants,â she added.
âAnd to be close to family,â Jace said. âBitsy and Sonny, not to mention Angie and Brooke, right?â
Noelle looked at her phone, reading the last text. âMaybe. Angie is currently tearing the cabin upside down and inside out again, determined to find a secret hiding place for the deed. Apparently, Garrett Delacorte was extremely not nice.â She gave a dry laugh. âAngie used words that I donât often hear her say to describe the man.â
âIf she finds the deedâeven if she doesnâtâyou can add her to the long list of loved ones living in Asheville and the surrounding area.â He gave her a sly smile. âDid you happen to notice that I included myself as a loved one?â
She reached for his hand, threading their fingers. âOh, I noticed, Dr. Fleming.â
âShhh. Donât jinx it.â
âJinx what?â
âCassie and I have a joke that as soon as we mention my being a vet when weâre out doing something fun, an emergency call comes in. So we never jinx it.â
That made her laugh. âI love that kid,â she said on a sigh.
âSee? Thereâs that word again.
